For our last project we were partnered up with another group making it a group of four to create a design for the 3D ceramic printer. The limitations of the printer and the material were similar to the previous project so the design restrictions were not too different. The things to keep in mind for this project was that we could only have one perimeter so our three legged design was not possible for this project and the design could not be so top heavy because the clay is alot heavier than the plastic and unlike the plastic the clay is still very malleable after ejected out so the vessel itself was very fragile until baked in the kiln. One advantage of the ceramic printer was that the printer width and height were alot bigger so low slopes were more forgiving to use. With these criterias in mind we started brain storming ideas with the group.
As the group we wanted to incorporate some aspects of each of our design into this new design.
We narrowed down what made each of our previous projects distinct and started mashing up those ideas together. For Mary and I's design the star shape was distinct and for Emma and Kit it was the coin/handle that stood out while both had a vase like bulbous shape.

We came up with some variations of a vase with an star shape with coins sticking out. In the end we voted on a design that had Emma and Kit's design on the bottom and a star shaped vase on top with coins "stitching" the two designs together in the middle. The idea was that physically the vase would not be symmetrical horizontally, it would be shaped in a way that the silhouette of the vase would identical from all sides. After the idea was settled we decided rather than have one person design the model, we would have everyone make their interpretations of the design so there would be more variation and different perspectives shown that one designer might not come up with on their own.

After sharing our interpretations of the concept we voted on Kit's design because it's use of the large coins was appealing and the vase had the requirements the printer would be able to manage to print.

On the final day we went to ceramics to print out our design. The printer was alot faster than I had anticipated and it only took about 20 minutes to be fully complete. The texture made by the printer was something I really liked and we were all very pleased with the overall end product of this project.

I had alot of fun in this class, I came in with zero knowledge in 3d design and programs but came out with a new interest that I am now trying to learn more on my free time.
Thank you for reading my blog posts,
