Mesh Mixer Refinement

For our third week of class we were introduced to Mesh Mixer to refine our mashup models.

During our group critique I got some helpful critiques and perspective that had never occurred to me if I had not had this critique session. The thing that stuck out to me the most is that I was told that my way of thinking is very linear and I tend to mashup one object and replace an aspect of that object with something that looked visually similar in it's place. I completely agree with that critique, I had many mashups that were used because of it's similar looks. It was very fascinating to see how very different every member tackled the mashup project and how they're way of thinking showed, from visual similarity mashup, thought provoking metaphorical mashup and functional design mashups.

The mashup that I decided to refine is "Support" because it was the one that both my group members liked the most and also because this was one of the few mashups that I made that weren't just combined due to it's visual similarity.

The first thing I did when I imported the models into Mesh Mixer was to remove the base from the atlas statue and the heel of the high heel.

Next step was to move the arms using the select tool and transform tool so that the hands would be actually touching the shoe.

I then sculpted and refined the hands, feet and face to make it more detailed. Finally I tried to bulk up and refine the muscles with my very limited understanding of anatomy.

This mashup is part of remix culture because of the process in how it was created and the final product that came out of it. By acquiring the 3D models from thingiverse made by other artists I was able to make a new concept that I could share back to thingiverse for someone else to do as they wish to it, whether that be adding on to it, refining it or creating it in the physical world. Since this is a high heel that could be worn by people they can adjust and refine to their liking and create it becoming prosumers, changing the old classic producer and consumer relationship.

Mesh Mash Up

For our second week of OBDF 110 we learned about remix culture and to try our hands on it.
Remix culture is the process of creating new things and ideas with already pre-existing creations. With that definition almost everything in our modern age is a remix.

For our assignment we got two or more objects from Thingiverse and mesh mash them in Tinkercad to create new concepts.

   1. Sweet Desert

When I imagine a cactus it's usually in a brown pot so that gave me the idea to replace the pot with an ice cream cone. This is one's a simple concept but I think it's alright for the first one I made.

2. Fighting Fire w/ Fire

It's a fire extinguisher that shoots out fire so I guess it could be considered a flame thrower in disguise. Fire can't spread if everything is already burnt to a crisp.

3. Dip it in Milk

There's so many Oreo flavors out there, why don't they just make a meal then. Home made Alberta beef patties with lettuce, tomato, caramelized onion and mushroom sandwiched between crunchy chocolate Oreo cookies.

    4. Social media                     controller

Social media controls a lot of peoples lives so I created a controller that gives you the illusion of control but in reality the controller/ social media is the one controlling you.

5. Power of Love

The mane of the male lion reminded me of flowers. I first tried a more simple flower but the lion looked like a lion a young child would draw and it had a familiarity to it's look so instead the rose gave it a more unique look I haven't seen before.

 6. Budget Cuts

Space traveling millions of light years make sense but a ray of light that can lift and carry objects!? The Aliens couldn't afford the UFO abduction beam so they had to use a tried and true plunger method.

7. Worried about the Future

A modern "The Thinker" by Auguste Rodin.
A confused and scared young adult pondering about his future while listening to Kendrick Lamar with his airpods and a puff out of his watermelon JUUL when the thoughts get too scary.

   8. No Wind
       No Worry

A sailboat is just a boat without the wind but what if you could just make the wind?

9. BANANAAAA

Yes I am aware that is not a banana but in fact corn. While searching for other things on thingiverse I stumbled upon some minion goggles and as much as I dislike them I can't deny how iconic they have become. The corn worked so well cause there's many small identical yellow kernels that stick together just like the minions.

10. Berry Gross

The shape of strawberries works so well with the abdomen of the spider! This is my favorite mash up, I just find it very cute and appealing with the contrast of colours and the leaf of the strawberry making it look like the spider is wearing a skirt.

11. Thomas's the Electrical                    Outlet

I think we've all seen the face the holes of the electrical outlet creates. I went through a few faces before ending up with this one. I first tried emojis but they were too simple and flat. Next I tried a realistic face but it didn't fit the shape well and it was just scary. Thomas hit a nice middle ground of the previous two, it fits well, recognizable, and has a little uneasy feeling.

12. Support

A mash up of a high heel and Atlas holding the earth. Don't know how functional this heel would be, I'd imagine Atlas's legs chipping off after a couple steps.

Just a bedside table

For our first project we watched the documentary film Objectified by Gary Hustwit and then using the film as an inspiration create a 3D object in tinkercad. The film explored the ideas of designers around the world and their perspective on design. I learned a lot from the hour long documentary about design, for example how good design should feel natural and never even cross the mind of the user.

For my object I decided to make a simple bed side table but with some features added in to it. The part in the film that stood out to me the most was the quote by Jonathan Ive, " Indicator has a value when it is indicating something but if it's not indicating something it shouldn't be there". I never had the thought of a design that is visible when needed but when not in use it becoming invisible. When I thought about that concept I started noticing many things around me that are visible even when not in use and the thing that jumped out at me were the charging cables for electronics. Micro USBs, lighting cables, adapters and such are needed when charging the electronic but when unplugged they are just left in the outlet with the wire sticking out. So for my object I thought it would be great if the bedside table top was a wireless battery charger so just by putting your phone on the table the phone will automatically charge.

Another thing I learned from the film is that getting rid of unneeded clutter and simplifying can achieve the objects goal successfully. Since the table would need energy to power the wireless charger, adding a built in lamp would clear more space on top and hide the lamp as part of the table when not in use.

Final ceramic 3D project

This will be my last blog post for OBDF 100, I learned a ton and had a blast while doing it! For our last project we were partnered up wit...
